Certificate of bachelorhood and spinsterhood are issued by the local authorities in the marriage registry department, this shows that the applicant has not and never been marriage in Nigeria. It is always requested of a person who wants to enter a lawful marriage abroad where polygamy is illegal. The process is stressful and requires patience with the system, there is currently no e-service for this application in Nigeria, and applicants must attend in person or through a legal representative.

To begin the application process, applicants are required to obtain a Sworn Affidavit of Bachelorhood from a High Court in Nigeria.

Applicants may then take the Sworn Affidavit from a High Court in Nigeria to their Local Government Area Office to obtain a Certificate.

The obtained Certificate must then be notarized and authenticated at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja depending the purpose and the country it is intended for.

Requirements are two Passport Photographs of the applicant and the deponent, Photocopy of Data page of Nigerian Passport of the applicant.
